  Destination Information

Zanzibar, (probably from Persian ?????? zangi-bar, which means 'Coast Black') is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania which comprises a pair of islands off the east coast of Africa called Unguja or Zanzibar (1,554 km ²) and Pemba . These, with Mafia Island are usually sometimes called the Spice Islands, although the term is most often associated with the Moluccas.

The economic center and the largest city is Zanzibar City on the island of Unguja. The Stone Town of Zanzibar (historic center), was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000, being one of the most important cities of the Swahili culture.

The main industries are spices (nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper) and tourism. Zanzibar is also the only place where dwells the Zanzibar red colobus monkey.
